Actor-Director Workshop - Washington Connection
A unique partnership... Columbia Academy Video & Film Production students regularly partner with Mark Brandon's Acting Studio actors to perform and shoot original dramatic scenes. It's a great opportunity for students from both schools to come together to hone their acting and filmmaking skills.

Commercial: 'Intel iMacs'
Columbia Academy VFP students produced this :30 spec commercial for the new Intel iMac computers. We sent the commercial to Apple and they liked it so much that they offered to post it on their educational website! The commercial was directed by Sohrab Sandhu with the entire VFP class involved in the process AND the CA post production class wrote and produced the original music. A truly collaborative effort.

Commercial: 'PSA for BC Children's Hospital'
Columbia Academy VFP students produced this 30-second public service announcement tv commercial on behalf of the BC Children's Hospital and their campaign for bicycle helmet safety awareness.
The two day location shoot, directed by VFP student, Brendan Bailey, gave students valuable training and experience, plus - every student received television production credits to add to their resumes. The PSA has aired numerous times on several Vancouver television stations.
An interesting side note, there are only two shots in the commercial - each done in one continuous handheld shot - and each requiring a great deal of rehearsal and collaboration between the cast and crew.

Corporate: Canadian Hemochromatosis Society
An awareness video produced by students of Columbia Academy's Video & Film Production program for the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society. Hemochromatosis is a serious blood disorder that often goes undiagnosed. The video was distributed to medical professionals across Canada through hospitals, clinics, and doctor's offices in order to foster a better understanding of the condition and to encourage testing. Directed by VFP student, Jonathan Leduc, who also created the graphics and animation. (Please note: this a large file (15 MB) and will require a longer time to download.)

Documentary: RAK the World
"5 Minutes to Change Your World" was a documentary film contest in which teams had seven days to create a 5-7 minute doc. The docs had to show the impact of the topic on the filmmaker's community and show a possible solution(s) or how it transformed their world. Genie Kolinkovsky and a number of CA VFP students completed and submitted their short doc, 'RAK The World', about a group of school children using Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) to help make the world a better place. CA Sound Design students wrote the original music and did the post sound. Out of 13 teams competing, our CA students finished third.

Music Video Slideshow: Numb
A slide show of stills of VFP students creating a special effects shot of a mirror breaking during a recent music video shoot. Director Sanna Whone says, "It was a very difficult shot. We had only one specially treated shatterproof mirror and it had to break on cue with the music. Strangely enough, it wouldn't break at all on the first four tries. We got it on the fifth take, though, and the shot looks amazing."

Music Video: Feel You There
"Feel You There" is an original song, written by brothers Brendan and Carmen Bailey.
Brendan (who sings and co-stars in the video was also the Director and Editor) is a graduate of the VFP program. Carmen (who plays drums in the video) is a graduate of the Recording & Sound Design program at CA.
The song was recorded in the studios of the Recording division and the music video was shot & edited in the Video & Film division.

Music Video: Novastatik
VFP students completed production on the first music video for the hot Vancouver, BC band, Novastatik. The video was shot over four days and nights on location in Vancouver and in the CA production studio. The video was crewed entirely by CA's VFP program students. CA Sound Design students did dialogue replacement and created foley on the opening scenes. Novastatik is: Ty March, lead vocals; Mike Lackner, guitar, vocals; Jezza Butler, bass, vocals; and Justin Gendreau, drums. Jennifer Stewart plays the love interest in the video.

Music Video: Numb
A music video interpretation of the Linkin Park song, Numb, produced and directed by VFP student, Sanna Whone. The lead male actor was VFP student, Jeffrey Yaworski. Shot and edited by VFP student, Brian Shaw.
The video contains a number of challenging shots, including a special effects mirror shot in which Jeff Yaworski sings to himself and smashes the mirror in frustration (see the Numb music video slideshow below for a description of that shot). There's also a very cool underwater shot which required a lot of dedication and determination from Jeff Yaworksi and cinematographer Brian Shaw to pull off.

Short Film: The Silent Room
"The Silent Room" is a beautiful short film about loneliness based on Syrian Folk Art written, directed, and edited by VFP student Bassem Chabou. The film was accepted and screened at the Vancouver International Student Film Festival - one of only ten student films selected.
Bassem has graduated and returned to his native Syria and is working as an Assistant Director for television.

Columbia Academy Video & Film Production students produced a seven-episode television series, Backstage Pass. Each half-hour episode profiled an up-and-coming local musical artist with interviews and live performances. Shot with eight cameras and utilizing mobile production studios from Shaw Television, the shows were a phenomenal learning experience for our students.
CA Video & Film Production students did the shooting, lighting, and editing. CA Recording & Sound Design students recorded the bands live using Pro Tools and completed the mix for television.

VFP students in action on location
A slide show of stills taken as the students & staff of VFP worked on shooting a thirty second PSA on behalf of the BC Children's Hospital. The purpose of the PSA was to remind parents to ensure that their children always wear their bicycle helmets when riding to prevent serious head injuries. All VFP students & staff, along with VFP and Recording grad Vu Anh Ngoc Nguyen, went on location for the two day shoot.
