Broadcast Arts Hands-On Training

The Broadcast Performing Arts (BPA) training program will introduce you to the professional world of broadcasting. You’ll develop realistic skills in the creative, technical, and business aspects of the industry and will graduate with a solid foundation in the basics of broadcasting.

At Columbia Academy, you learn by doing. The Broadcast Performing Arts training program provides practical Hands-On experience in the various positions found in radio. The training provides the means for excellence and encourages proficiency in:

  • Understanding On-Air Hosting of a radio show in a variety of music formats: classic rock, modern rock, adult contemporary, urban, and contemporary hit radio
  • Preparation and delivery of a good news and sportscast
  • Learning to appreciate and adapt to different market sizes
  • Discovering the secrets of engaging and holding an audience
  • Relating to different market demographics
  • Understanding the craft of copywriting
  • Developing voice quality and communication skills
  • Voice-tracking broadcasts
  • Learning how to create and implement sound clips
  • Using MediaTouch music automation software
  • Capturing and editing news using Burli software
  • Developing production & digital editing skills using ProTools software
  • Learning how and why a commercial traffic department functions the way it does
  • Understanding radio sales and promotions
  • Mastering time management
  • Learning and appreciating middle management positions
  • Developing a quality Demo Tape and resume
  • Discovering personal strengths and how to sell them to potential employers

Additional skill development includes:

  • Development and/or improvement of your computer skills through the use of the Internet, word processor, digital audio production software, music storage & selection software, and computer-controlled production facilities.
  • Fostering personal awareness of and the necessity for a positive, vibrant, responsible approach to a professional career.
  • Identifying and increasing the personal qualities of self-reliance, self-motivation, self-organization and sense of responsibility - all important ingredients for success in the industry.
  • Demonstrating proper work ethics, studio disciplines and the importance of teamwork.
  • Providing realistic experience in the middle management positions associated with facilities and their day-to-day operations.

Throughout the course, emphasis is also placed in the areas of format, writing styles, grammar, time management, work ethic, organizational skills and developing a positive attitude.
